Selborne almost home
11 Apr 2017
Locations received from Selborne's tag on 9 April showed that he had crossed the Pyrenees and was heading north. During the late evening his tag powered down to enable the solar panel on the tag to recharge the battery that powers it. At this stage Selborne was in Brittany and only 320km (199 miles) from his New Forest home. It is likely that Selborne continued north through the night and when we next hear from him he could be back in the UK.
PJ has crossed the Sahara
11 Apr 2017
Locations received from PJ's tag during the early morning on 10 April showed that he was on the southern edge of the High Atlas Mountains in Morocco, and that he had successfully completed his desert crossing. He is currently close to the village of Ait Aamamou.
Larry still in Guinea
11 Apr 2017
Larry is still in Guinea. He arrived here a week ago and we would expect him to remain here for a little while longer, preparing for his desert crossing.
Bill still in Ivory Coast
11 Apr 2017
Since arriving in Ivory Coast on 22 March Bill hasn't moved far from the Komoe River. Hopefully he has been finding lots of food in preparation for his desert crossing.
Larry in Guinea
04 Apr 2017
Larry has travelled even further west and is now in Guinea. He's in an area just south of the National Park of Upper Niger. We would expect him to leave in the next week or so. Will he be the next Cuckoo to arrive in Europe?
Peckham crosses into Nigeria
04 Apr 2017
Peckham has left Cameroon and crossed the border into Nigeria, travelling 390km (240 miles) west to a location just south of the city of Abakaliki.
Victor in Nigeria
04 Apr 2017
From his last location in Cameroon, Victor has travelled around 995 km (620 miles) to reach a new location in southwest of Nigeria. He is now just north of Lagos, Nigeria's largest City.
Selborne in northern Spain
28 Mar 2017
From Algeria, Selborne has flown a further 1000km (660 miles) to arrive in northern Spain in the late morning of 27 March. He is in the southern Pyrenees and the closest large town is Jaca (NW of his latest location). He has been moving around in local forest so looks to be foraging to fuel up for the last leg of his return journey. How soon he returns will depend on his ability to find food and be able to rest.
Selborne crosses the desert
27 Mar 2017
A series of locations received from Selborne's tag between 14.30 and 19.00 on 24 March showed that he was heading north across the Sahara, and that he had made it into central Algeria, and that he was about halfway through the desert crossing. This was the last we heard from the tag until 03.00 on 25 March. He had made it, and was just north of the desert town of El Guerra. Selborne is the first of our tagged Cuckoos to cross the desert this spring.
