Robinson has crossed the desert

Robinson's tag shows that he is across the desert and is northeast of Lake Chad. His tag powered-up 24 hours earlier than we were expecting, presumably the result of the solar panel on the tag getting plenty of sunshine during the crossing.

He began his desert flight from the Libyan coast around 8.00am on 25 July, by 9.00pm on the same day he was halfway across. His tag powered-up again just before 10.00am on 26 July, showing he was 805km (500 miles) further south and west and heading towards Lake Chad. The last location from his tag was just before 5.00pm on the same day; he was just 69km (43 miles) from the lake.

Locations received from Robinson's tag during the late evening of 25 July showed that he was in the middle of his desert crossing. We will now have to wait until late on 27 July to see if he has been successful. The winds over the desert currently look favourable for helping him on his way.

Robinson has crossed the Alps

Robinson is now in northern Italy, a known stopover site for many of our Cuckoos. This is where they prepare for the crossing of the Sahara; for some the feeding is so good they are able to fly from here all the way non-stop to the southern edge of the desert, a distance of over 3,000km (2,000 miles). Robinson is likely to spend a little while here now.

Robinson in the Alps

Two locations received this morning at 05:00 show that Robinson has moved further south and is at the eastern end of Lake Geneva, Switzerland, close to Saint-Maurice. He is now just under 1,000km (600 miles) south and east of Sherwood Forest, Nottinghamshire. His new location will show on the map tomorrow when it will be automatically updated.

Robinson is on his way

Robinson has left Sherwood Forest, Nottinghamshire, and has flown 540km (336 miles) southeast into northern France. He is currently moving around an area of wooded valleys south of Chamouille.

Since being tagged on 15 May, Robinson has remained close to his tagging site in Sherwood Forest, Nottinghamshire, but it could only be a matter of time before he begins his long journey south.
