Gethin Jenkins-Jones

Development and Engagement Coordinator

Gethin is responsible for expanding the BTO community in Wales and making sure the whole volunteer network feels motivated, appreciated, and informed.

Interests & Responsibilities

From childhood, Gethin has been a keen birder and BTO volunteer, and prior to this role served as BTO’s Youth Representative for Cardiff. As the Development and Engagement Coordinator for BTO Cymru, Gethin’s role involves supporting and working alongside the fantastic Regional Network in Wales to expand BTO’s appeal and survey coverage across the country.

Since graduating in BSc Conservation Biology and Ecology in 2020, Gethin has worked as a field ecologist both for the BTO and BSG Ecology consultancy. He is also experienced in bird ID training, having worked as a Community Ranger for Cardiff Council and having spent a season as a Volunteer Warden at Spurn Bird Observatory. Now part of the BTO team, Gethin will coordinate events, training and other activities to engage and motivate supporters in Wales.

By engaging with new audiences and supporting BTO’s existing volunteers, he hopes to increase participation in BTO surveys, to build an ever-clearer picture of the state of the country's birds. Participation also brings considerable enjoyment and he hopes that his personal passion for bird recording will inspire others too.

During his time in university, Gethin developed a more broad interest in conservation, expanding his interest into multiple species groups and land management, as well as developing an interest in engagement techniques for different age-groups.
