Urgent action is needed to tackle the decline of breeding wader populations in the UK. Oystercatcher, Lapwing, Curlew, Dunlin, Redshank, Ringed Plover, and Common Sandpiper are all plummeting in numbers. They are suffering from the effects of habitat loss, predation, and nest destruction. BTO scientists have been working together with individuals, landowners, and organisations to develop and evaluate methods aimed at increasing the chances of survival for these much loved birds. This is a great start, but so much more needs to be done to prevent their disappearance as breeding species from the UK.

Operation Wader

We need to maximise the impact of all of the work being done for breeding waders in the UK. Operation Wader is BTO’s plan for doing just that. We want to dedicate a scientist to harness the data we and others collect. This much-needed person will ensure that we can effectively engage with even more local and national groups to combine our efforts, work as a force for change, and reach our common goals quickly. For this to make any real and lasting difference to populations of breeding waders in the UK, it is crucial that this project runs for at least three years. Without your support, we won’t be able to make this happen.

We also desperately need to develop a bespoke online data capturing and monitoring system. It will make the job of gathering and sharing data from different sources more efficient and effective. Not only will this system be of benefit for those collecting and processing data, but also for those who need this scientific evidence to design policy and conservation action. Most importantly, it will help ensure the most successful outcomes for the UK’s breeding waders.
