170433 and 170435 tagged in Sherwood

22 Jun 2017
170433 and 170435 are our two newly tagged Cuckoos from Sherwood Forest. They join Selborne, who was tagged in the New Forest area in 2016.

170429 name to be decided shortly

22 Jun 2017
This Cuckoo is being named shortly by pupils at Thetford Grammar School, who've been helping the BTO with our invertebrate research by taking part in What's Under Your Feet?, our collaborative study with EDF Energy. They invited us to their 'dig' and are kindly helping us to promote the project to other schools by allowing us to video and photograph their efforts and promote the work through social media.

170430 receives a name

22 Jun 2017
Carlton has been named by Suffolk Wildlife Trust after Carlton Marshes where he was tagged on the Norfolk/Suffolk border.

Selborne moving south

22 Jun 2017
A signal on 21 June shows Selborne heading south, out at sea just off the coast near Bordeaux. Further signals received today show that he continued onwards to the Basque Region in northern Spain. He is currently just 40km (25 miles) south-east of Bilbao.

Larry in Croatia

22 Jun 2017
Larry has left France. By the afternoon of 22 June had travelled 890km (550 miles). and signals revealed that he was on the island of Punta Križa, off the coast of Croatia. This is several weeks earlier than he visited Croatia last year. In fact, at this time last year, Larry was still at his tagging site before then moving on to Hungary by 24 June and then to Croatia in July, but further south than he is currently.

Larry is the third Cuckoo to leave

20 Jun 2017
Transmissions show that by the evening of the 19 June, Larry was the third of our tagged Cuckoos to have left the UK. Signals revealed he was 85km (50 miles) east of Reims, between the communes of Septsarges and Dannevouxis in the department of Meuse, France. Larry spent around six weeks in the UK before departing.

Selborne is off!

20 Jun 2017
Selborne has become our second tagged Cuckoo to leave the UK. From the New Forest he has travelled 330km (205 miles) to
La Guerche-de-Bretagne, a commune in the Ille-et-Vilaine department in Brittany. He arrived here in northwestern France on 17 June. He spent just under two months in the UK.

Victor in Spain

20 Jun 2017
Victor has headed further south and is now in Spain. He travelled 560km (350 miles) from his last location in France and by morning on the 15 June had crossed the Pyrenees and was just north of Aragon. He then travelled a further 250km (155 miles) and by the 19 June was 50km south-east of the city of Cuenca which is set in the mountains of east-central Spain.

Victor in La Brenne Regional Nature Park

14 Jun 2017
Victor has moved a little further south and is now in the La Brenne Regional Nature Park, east of Poitiers. He stopped here in May on his way back to the UK and presumably found it a good enough spot to revisit!

Victor on his way back to Africa

05 Jun 2017

Locations received from Victor's tag during the late afternoon on 4 June showed that he had left the UK and was in central France. Last spring he left the UK around 25 June, stopping briefly in northeastern France before moving to Central France. He is currently in an area of forest just south of Orleans and around 100km (65 miles) north of the area close to Chateauroux where he spent 10 days last spring.
