Updates on PJ 's movements

The end of the road for PJ

09 Jun 2022

We are very sad to report that the time has finally come to bid farewell to our old friend PJ, the longest lived of our satellite tagged Cuckoos to date. PJ was tagged in the King's Forest in Suffolk on Tuesday 7 June, 2016 when he was already a second year bird (i.e. hatched in 2015). He arrived back in the UK on 24th April this year but there have been no transmissions from his tag since 6th May when he was still at his breeding grounds in the King's Forest. Tag failures are rare in the UK, where the tags are not exposed to such harsh conditions as when the birds are on migration, so we must assume that PJ has reached the end of his life. He was at least seven years old when he arrived in the King’s Forest this spring, only one year short of the longevity record for a wild UK Cuckoo.

As well as being the first tagged Cuckoo to use both the Spanish and Italian routes to the wintering grounds in the Congo Basin, PJ completed six epic tracked migrations to Africa and back. This is the greatest number of migratory journeys of any tagged Cuckoo. When he returned to the UK in April this year he had over 60,000 miles under his wing.

Although PJ may be gone, his legacy - six years of location data - lives on, and his contribution to our understanding of Cuckoo migration will continue to inform BTO’s research. PJ built on the contributions of all the tagged Cuckoos before him, just as this year’s cohort will build on the knowledge we gained from PJ - a body of research which we hope will help reverse the sad decline seen in the UK Cuckoo population.

We are grateful for the data and the inspiration that PJ has given us and hope that you too have enjoyed following him. If you'd like to share any reflections on PJ's amazing story we would love to hear them.

No news from PJ

27 May 2022

It's been a couple of weeks since we've received any updates from PJ. The last transmission from his tag showed that he was at his breeding grounds in the King's Forest, Thetford.

PJ is back again

25 Apr 2022
New updates received early yesterday morning (24 April) showed that PJ had flown the final 1,000 km from northern Spain and was back in the UK. Further updates received since tell us that he is safely back on his breeding grounds in the King's Forest in Suffolk having completed his sixth tracked migration between the UK and Africa. Each complete migration from Suffolk to his wintering grounds in the Congo Basin and back again is approximately 16,000 km (9,940 miles) so we have now tracked him over at least 96,000 km (59,640 miles). He was a second year bird when we tagged him so he had already completed a full migration cycle before we tagged him in 2016. This means that over the course of his life so far he has flown 112,000 km (69,580 miles) on migration alone. It is a wonder he has any energy left to chase around his breeding grounds defending his territory and searching for mates! The oldest ringed UK Cuckoo was caught alive at Wicken Fen in Cambridgeshire in 1983 - 6 years, 11 months and 2 days after he was ringed as an adult, making him at least 7 years, 11 months and 2 days old. PJ will have to survive another year to vie for the crown of the UK's oldest known Cuckoo but his achievements so far have already exceeded our wildest expectations - what a bird!

PJ reaches northern Spain

18 Apr 2022
Over the last 472 Km (294 miles) north to northern Spain. He is now more or less neck and neck with Victor II who is approximately 200 Km (125 miles) east of him. PJ is now in the Sierra del Perdon mountain range approximately 10 Km south of Pamplona.

PJ nudges west in Spain

11 Apr 2022
New updates show that PJ has flown 57 km (35 miles) west and is now in the Sierra de Alacaraz mountain range in Albacete Province, southeast Spain.

PJ arrives in Spain

07 Apr 2022
PJ has continued his progress north after crossing the Sahara and over the last 48 hours he has crossed the Mediterranean and arrived in Spain. By the early hours of yesterday morning he had made it to the Murcia province of southern Spain where he was just within the Paraje El Nevazo de Abajo ecological park. He is 113km (70 miles) due west of Alicante so he is still a couple of hundred kilometres further east than his usual route, but as we now know, this is no big deal for these birds! He is approximately 175km further north than Cuckoo Ellis but will he maintain this lead or will Ellis leap frog him? It usually takes PJ no more than about 10 days to get from Spain back to the UK so we are keeping everything crossed that we'll soon be sending you the exciting news that he has made it "home".

PJ is crossing the Sahara

04 Apr 2022

Almost six years after he was tagged in June 2016, Cuckoo PJ is once again speeding back to his breeding grounds in the King's Forest, Suffolk. Wintering each year in northern Angola and the Congo Basin, he returns via Ivory Coast in west Africa, a 16,000km (10,000 mile) round trip. This means that if he makes it back to Suffolk this year he will have racked up well in excess of 60,000 miles in his lifetime. We continue to be amazed by the feats of this incredible Cuckoo and remain thankful that the tag has lasted so well.

PJ has spent the last few weeks in Ivory Coast, feeding up in preparation for attempting his crossing of the Sahara. At 09:02 on Saturday morning (April 2) he was in southern Mauritania. Over the next 38 hours he continued north over the desert, flying at an average speed of 28mph and covering 1,340 km (832 miles) so that by 23:42 last night (April 3) he had reached western Algeria. His route north over the desert has taken him further east than in previous year because of stiff westerly winds. These will switch to southerly as he moves north over Algeria, giving him a welcome boost along the way. He usually progresses through Spain and France back to England, arriving back in Suffolk between 18th and 30th April.

PJ pushes west into Ivory Coast

04 Mar 2022
New updates received early this morning (4 March) show that PJ has flown 366km (227 miles) south west from Ghana into Ivory Coast. He is now in central Ivory Coast, approximately 40km north of the capital city of Yamoussoukro and just north of the town of Tiebissou. PJ knows this part of Central Ivory coast well, having stopped off here on previous northward migrations. We expect him to remain here for a few weeks before embarking on the next leg of his journey.

PJ arrives in West Africa

27 Feb 2022
New updates received from PJ's tag between 9am and 11am this morning (27 Feb) show that he has flown 2,134km (1,326 miles) north west from the Congo to Ghana. He is now in north west Ghana, close to the border with Ivory Coast. PJ usually stops off in Ivory Coast for a few weeks before embarking on the next leg of his journey by crossing the Sahara. Last year PJ arrived in Ghana on 27th Feb and moved on to Ivory Coast by 1st March where he stayed until beginning his crossing of the Sahara on 14th April. So we expect PJ to cross over into Ivory Coast and then to stay there until early April.

PJ is on the move

22 Feb 2022
It looks as if PJ has begun his migration north, leaving Gabon behind and flying 255km (159 miles) north into the Republic of Congo. He is now in the Odzala-Kokoua National Park in northern Congo, first protected in 1935, making it one of Africa's oldest national parks. 440 bird species have been recorded in this park, along with around 100 mammal species including one of Africa's most diverse primate populations. The habitat here is old growth forest, jungle, dry forest, savanna and rainforest.

PJ moves North

12 Nov 2021
PJ appears to have flown 375 km (232 miles) north from his last location in the south of the Republic of Congo over the border into Gabon. He is now in south eastern Gabon, approximately 50km north of the town of Lekoni. It is a little surprising to see PJ moving further away from his traditional wintering area in Angola so it'll be interesting to see where he moves to next.

PJ closes in on his wintering grounds

08 Nov 2021
PJ has left Equatorial Guinea and moved to southern Republic of the Congo, close to the border with Democratic Republic of the Congo. He is now only 400km (248 miles) away from his wintering area in Angola, a mere stone's throw for a Cuckoo. He arrived there on 21st November last year and stayed until 17 January, so we should see him making his last southerly movement soon.

PJ arrives in the Congo

02 Nov 2021
A journey of 768 km (478 miles) south east from Cameroon has taken PJ into the north western part of the Republic of the Congo. He is in the forest to the east of the city of Kelle. His final destination in previous years has been northern Angola, this will require him to fly a further 900 km south. Victor II is also in Congo, approximately 85 km south of PJ.

PJ crosses into Cameroon

22 Oct 2021
New updates received yesterday evening show that PJ has flown 681 km (423 miles) south east from his last location in Nigeria over the border into Cameroon. He knows this part of Cameroon well having made several stops here both on his southwards and northwards migrations in previous years. He may next visit Republic of Congo on his way to Angola.

PJ heads south

19 Oct 2021
Over the last few days PJ has flown 340 km (211 miles) south from northern Nigeria where he has been since 13 August, to his new location in the western part of Kaduna state. He is just east of the man-made Shiroro Reservoir which was created in 1984 by damming the Kaduna River. He usually stops south of Abuja which is another 120 km south east of his current location. The next country on his list is likely to be Cameroon.

PJ moves to Nigeria

13 Aug 2021
A new update from PJ's tag this morning show that he has flown 390 Km (243 miles) south east and over the border from Niger into Nigeria. He is now in north west Nigeria, approximately 195 Km (121 miles) east of JAC and 200 Km (195miles) north west of Calypso. Ellis and AJ are also currently in Nigeria.

PJ forges on into southern Mali

05 Aug 2021
Since our last update PJ has flown a further 1,022 Km (635 miles) south, passing through the highlands of the Hoggar mountains in southern Algeria and crossing into Mali. By 03:55 this morning he had reached south east Mali and was just outside the Ansongo Giraffe Reserve (réserve partielle de faune d'Ansongo Ménaka), a 1,750,000 hectare protected area designated in 1950 to try to conserve the last remaining Giraffes in this part of Africa. Unfortunately the Giraffes have disappeared but it remains a special area for wildlife and people.

PJ is crossing the Sahara (again)!

03 Aug 2021
On his sixth tracked migration south, our super Cuckoo PJ has made it to Africa. On Saturday morning he had flown 315 km (195 miles) south from the Spanish Pyrenees to the town of Barracas, Castellón, Spain. By yesterday morning he had flown 1,150 Km (715 miles) south, across the Mediterranean and into Algeria. He pressed on through the day and by the time we received the last update at 22:27 last night, he was in the Hoggar mountains in the central Sahara, southern Algeria. He was 218 Km (135 miles) north of the oasis city of Tamanrasset, where citrus fruits, apricots, dates, almonds, cereals, corn, and figs are grown. Hopefully when we receive the next update we will see that PJ has successfully completed his desert crossing.

PJ pops back to the Pyrenees

22 Jul 2021
A new update received early this morning shows that PJ has flown 215Km (134 miles) north east into the Spanish Pyrenees. He is now approximately 10Km north east of the town of Isaba in the Navarre region of northern Spain. He is currently in the foothills of Mesa de los Tres Reyes (the table of the three kings) which is the highest point in Spanish Navarre at 2,428m (7,966ft). PJ made a very similar north-easterly movement between 25-30 July last year.

PJ moves north

19 Jul 2021
PJ has flown a total of 103Km (64 miles) north and is now 27Km (17 miles) east of Burgos, close to the Ãšzquiza and Arlanzon reservoirs in the province of Burgos, Castile and León, Spain. We know from his movements in previous years that PJ is not afraid of doubling back on himself while on migration, probably in search of better foraging areas.

PJ crosses into Spain

16 Jul 2021
A series of updates from PJ last night show that he has crossed from France into Spain. Since our last update he has flown 415 km (258 miles) south west over the Pyrenees. He spent yesterday evening close to the village of Montejo de Tiermes in the province of Soria, Castile and León, Spain. The last updates we received showed him heading north from this location towards Salas de los Infantes in Burgos Province.

PJ is on his way again

13 Jul 2021

PJ has finally set off on his sixth southerly migration. Having spent the last couple of months in Suffolk, by 22:50 on Thursday night he was approaching Hatfield Peverel in Essex and by 23:39 he was crossing the Thames close to Canvey Island. At 06:27am Friday morning he was over the Forest of Fontainebleau in France. By 05:24 on Sunday morning PJ had flown a further 485 km (301 miles) south to the south of France to his current location in the west of the Gers region, close to the town of Estang. He is now 70 km west of PJ who is in the far north east of Gers. Since leaving his breeding grounds in Suffolk on Thursday night, PJ jas already covered 941 km (585 miles).

PJ still in Suffolk

17 Jun 2021
Having arrived back in Suffolk on 22nd April PJ has spent the time since on his breeding grounds in the King's Forest. In previous years PJ as started his migration south in late June/early July so we expect hm to hang around for another week or two in Suffolk.

PJ is back again!

24 Apr 2021

After five years and a staggering 50,000 miles, Suffolk Cuckoo PJ has once again returned from Africa to his breeding grounds in the King's Forest, Suffolk. He is the first of our tagged Cuckoos to survive five complete migrations with his tag still functioning. When we last updated you he was having a well deserved rest on the Isle of Wight, but despite the many attractions of that fine place, it couldn't keep him away from East Anglia for long. New updates received from PJ's tag at 07:30 yesterday morning (Friday 22nd April) showed that he had covered the final 223km (139 miles) from the Isle of Wight to Suffolk. Further updates since show him flying around his breeding grounds, less than 5 miles from us here at BTO HQ in Thetford. He will stay here until early July before beginning his journey back to Africa once again.

PJ takes a break on the Isle of Wight

22 Apr 2021
New updates received from PJ's tag just before lunch yesterday (Wed 21st April) showed that he had flown 866 km (539 miles) north, over France and across the English Channel to his new location on the Isle of Wight. We received further updates from his tag yesterday evening showing him in the same area, on farmland close to the village of Havenstreet, just south west of Ryde. It is now just 223 km (139 miles) as the Cuckoo flies, back to his breeding grounds in the King's Forest, Suffolk. In previous years he has arrived back at his breeding grounds between 18th and 30th April so he is being very punctual. When we next update you, it will hopefully be to tell you that PJ has successfully made it "home".

PJ getting closer

19 Apr 2021
Updates received from PJ's tag just after 5am this morning show that he has flown a further 371km (231 miles) north east into northern Spain. He is now close to the shores of the Urranaga Reservoir, some 40km south east of Bilbao. How long will he linger before flying on? We will be keeping a close eye on the weather forecast over the next few days to spot likely opportunities that PJ may take to press on. Stay tuned!

PJ arrives in Spain

15 Apr 2021
Undeterred by the small feat of having just crossed the Sahara, PJ has pressed on, flying a further 751 km (476 miles) north and crossing from Morocco into Spain. By 5 pm yesterday evening he had made it to Central Spain. He is now just west of the town of Candeleda in the province of Avila in Castile & Leon. He is on the lower slopes of the Sierra de Gredos mountain range. He could be back in Suffolk by the time we receive the next update so stay tuned!

PJ crosses the Sahara!

15 Apr 2021

We caught and tagged Cuckoo 'PJ' in the King's Forest, Suffolk, in June 2016, and since then he has provided us with a wealth of valuable data. Through tracking PJ's migrations between UK and Africa, we have discovered that he spends the winter months in north-western Angola. Recently, while en-route to the UK he has spent several weeks feeding up in Ivory Coast and over the last few days we can see that he has tackled the mighty Sahara. He was in, or over, Mauritania on Sunday morning and by 8am yesterday morning (Monday) he had reached Morocco! The most recent update, which arrived at 19:40 last night, showed him in northern Morocco. He is currently in the Middle Atlas Mountains, approximately 95 km (59 miles) south east of Fes. From here, he will move up through Spain and France before crossing into England.

If he makes it back to Suffolk this year, PJ will have completed his fifth tracked migration, which is the most for any Cuckoo that we have tracked so far! It has been a nerve-racking time waiting for PJ to tackle the desert and we'll be keeping everything crossed that the rest of his journey goes smoothly. In previous years, he has successfully completed his desert crossing between 7th and 17th April and arrived back at his breeding grounds in Suffolk between 18th and 30th April, so he is close to his usual schedule.

PJ still in Ivory Coast

19 Mar 2021

PJ, who is on his fifth tracked annual migration to the UK from Africa, has spent the last couple of weeks in Ivory Coast. The rains are well established in the area that he's stopped off in - in fact, there's been a bit more than expected over the past month (up to 75mm). This should mean there's plenty of food for him. We don't know exactly what he'll be feeding on but expect that this will include some adult insects that have been aestivating over the dry season and have emerged in response to the start of the rains.

The area PJ is in was originally deciduous forest that has been transformed into secondary growth - this transformation might originally have been beneficial for Cuckoos, but depending on the extent of tree loss, it could reduce habitat quality for them. As it's now a few weeks since the rains commenced, it's likely that in addition to emergent insects, there could also be plenty of caterpillars (Cuckoos preferred prey on the breeding grounds) for him to eat by now. He's likely to use this fuel to put on fat amounting to at least 50% of his lean body mass, as well as enlarging his flight muscles, before migrating over the Sahara. He usually spends most of March in Ivory Coast before heading north across the Sahara.

PJ arrives in Ivory Coast

01 Mar 2021
PJ is sticking to his usual flight plan so far this year and after a brief stop in Ghana has flown a further 507 km (315 miles) west to Ivory Coast. He is now close to the river Nzi, approximately 100 km north east of the capital Yamoussoukro. He knows Ivory Coast well having stopped here in every year we have tracked him. In some years he has spent time in the far west of the country, close to the border with Liberia. We expect him to spend a few weeks here, during which time he will be feeding up in preparation for his Sahara crossing.

PJ visits Togo and Ghana

27 Feb 2021
Our longest-surviving tagged Cuckoo PJ is leading the pack back to the UK this year. Over the last few days he has covered 1,392 km (865 miles), flying west from Cameroon into west Africa. By 17:21 on Wednesday evening he had arrived in Togo, but he didn't stay long and by 22:17 that night he had continued over the border into Ghana. He is currently in eastern Ghana but based on his behaviour in previous years, we don't expect him to stay here for long. His destination is likely to be Ivory Coast, which is another 725 km (450 miles) further west and he usually arrives there by early March. He usually spends most of March in Ivory Coast before heading north across the Sahara.

PJ in Cameroon

15 Feb 2021
Since our last update PJ has flown a further 890 km (552 Miles) north from his last location in Gabon to his current location in Cameroon. He is now in an area of Guinean Savanna, near the Meng river in the south of the Adamawa region of Cameroon. He was in this same area between 3rd and 25th February 2020. In 2020 his next movement took him to Togo on his way to Ivory Coast. Over the next couple of weeks we expect PJ to cover the 2,000km (1,240 miles) journey west to Ivory Coast where he usually stops off to build up his fat reserves ready for crossing the Sahara.

PJ starts to move north

04 Feb 2021
Over the last few weeks PJ has flown 640 km (398 miles) north from north-western Angola, first to the Teke Plateau in Congo and, soon after, over the border into eastern Gabon. In previous years PJ has remained in Angola until late January before beginning his northward migration so he is right on track. He has usually reached Ivory Coast in west Africa by early March so we expect him to keep moving north and then west over the next 2-3 weeks. He will then stop over for a few weeks before tackling the Sahara.

PJ moves north

18 Dec 2020
Over the last couple of weeks, PJ has gradually moved 167 km (104 miles) north into the Zaire district of north-western Angola. He is now in dense rainforest 56 km (35 miles) N-NE of the town of N'Zeto. In previous years PJ has remained in Angola until late January.

PJ arrives in Angola

10 Nov 2020
After a visit to the shores of the Rio del Rey estuary in western Cameroon, new signals from PJ's tag show that by yesterday evening he had flown 725 km (450 miles) south east into eastern Gabon. In previous years he has wintered in northern Angola and if this is his destination this year, he has a further 970 km (600 miles) to go before he reaches this area.

PJ arrives in Cameroon

30 Oct 2020
Further updates received late yesterday afternoon and evening show that PJ has flown 653 km (406 miles) south east from his last location in Nigeria, over the border into Cameroon. He is now approximately 19 km (12 miles) west of the town of Tibati which is on the shore of Lake Mbakaou in central Cameroon.

PJ moves into Nigeria

29 Oct 2020
Having spent almost two months in southern Niger, it is good to see PJ on the move again. Over the past few days he has flown 622 km (387 miles) south into Nigeria. He is now 50 km (30 miles) west of the capital Abuja and only 93 km (58 miles) west of Carlton II who is east of Abuja. We expect PJ to follow a similar route south to Valentine, passing through or over Cameroon and on to his wintering grounds in northern Angola. His wintering areas in previous years have been to the east of Valentine's, nearer the coastal city of Luanda.

PJ goes east in Niger

02 Sep 2020
Over the last few days PJ has flown 244 km (151 miles) east within southern Niger. He is now around 50 km north of the border with Nigeria and 67 km south east of the city of Tahoua. He visited the same location during his southern migration in 2017. Based on his behaviour in previous years his route to his wintering grounds in Angola are likely to take him through Nigeria and Cameroon.

PJ has crossed the Sahara

26 Aug 2020
Updates received at around 06:00 this morning, show that PJ has flown a further 570 km (354 miles) south-south west from the norther border of Niger into the south western corner of Niger, completing his crossing of the Sahara. He is now approximately 165 km (102 miles) north east of the capital Niamey. PJ has arrived here in the rainy season with most of the annual rainfall expected between May and mid-September. It'll be interesting to see whether he stays here or follows Valentine in moving further east.

PJ is crossing the Sahara!

24 Aug 2020
Over the last few days, Suffolk Cuckoo PJ has made his move south, braving the mighty Sahara. On the first leg of his journey he left southern Italy and crossed the Mediterranean just to the west of Corsica and Sardinia. He flew over Tunisia and by 16:30 on Saturday he was in or over the Tassili n'Ajjer national park in south-east Algeria, a distance of 2,163 km (1,344 miles) from his last location in Italy. He doesn't appear to have stopped here as by 19:45 on the same day he was near the southern edge of the desert. He didn't hang around as by 20:03 last night he was a further 518 km (322 miles) south and approaching the border between Algeria and Niger. The last update received at 22:43 last night showed PJ just over the border in north western Niger, approximately 30 miles (50 km) west of the small desert town of Assamakka. PJ passed close to this location on his southerly migration in 2017 but quickly moved on to southern Niger. In previous years, PJ has spent time in southern Niger/northern Nigeria so hopefully when we next hear from him he will be a little further south, having completed his desert crossing.

PJ in Italy

10 Aug 2020
Since our last update PJ has left the Spanish Pyrenees and flown 788 km (490 miles) north east, back over the Pyrenees and into northern Italy. Having reached Ferriere, a commune in the Province of Piacenza, about 150 kilometers west of Bologna, he immediately turned back west. He flew 105 km ( 64 miles) west to his current location near Altare in the Province of Savona in the Italian region Liguria. He is approximately 10 km (6 miles) north west of Savona. PJ is now almost two weeks behind his usual schedule so we expect to see him making his crossing into Africa any day now.

PJ still in northern Spain

03 Aug 2020
PJ is still in the Ordesa and Monte Perdido National Park, Huesca, Spain, and the last update received a couple of days ago shows him in the wooded valley below the Castillo Mayor mountain. Castillo Mayor is a 2,014m (6,608ft) high limestone platform and the valleys below are home to an extensive mixed forest.

PJ double backs

31 Jul 2020
Over the last few days Suffolk Cuckoo PJ, on his fifth tracked migration to Africa, has made a u-turn. Signals received early yesterday morning show that he has left his previous location in the province of Soria, Castile and León in northern Spain and flown 228 km (141 miles) north west to the southern foothills of the Spanish Pyrenees. He is now on the edge of the Ordesa and Monte Perdido National Park, approximately 70 km (43 miles) north-east of the city of Huesca. We have observed our tagged Cuckoos making u-turns before, we presume that when this happens they are in search of better feeding opportunities.

PJ sitting tight

27 Jul 2020
Since our last update PJ has remained in the same forested area in the municipality of Tardelcuende in the province of Soria, Castile and León in northern Spain. Last year he left northern Spain on 28 July and in 2018 he departed on 29 July so we can expect him to make his next move very soon.

PJ arrives in Spain

10 Jul 2020
Updates received from PJ's tag yesterday morning showed that he had flown 678 km (421 miles) south west from his last location in France to a new location in Navarra, northern Spain. He stopped approximately 25 km (16 miles) north of Pamplona. Further updates received early this morning however suggest that he quickly moved on from here, with a few low quality locations showing him 175 km (108 miles) south west, in a forested area in the municipality of Tardelcuende in the province of Soria, Castile and León. We'll have to await further updates to be sure of PJ's current location. His route so far looks very similar to the route he followed south last year.

PJ departs UK on his fifth tracked migration south!

06 Jul 2020
Updates received from PJ's tag at 4pm on Saturday afternoon show that he has flown 450 km (280 miles) south on the first leg of his fifth tracked migration to Africa. His first stop-over is near Valpuiseaux in the Essonne department in ÃŽle-de-France in northern France. In 2019 PJ's route took him to southern France and northern Spain, where he stayed until late July, before crossing into Africa on 27 July. In other years however he has flown direct from France to Africa. If PJ successfully makes it across the Sahara this year, he will succeed Chris as our longest surviving tagged Cuckoo.

Local movements from Carlton II, PJ and Valentine

26 May 2020
Carlton II, PJ and Valentine are all busy flying around their breeding locations, with the odd possible feeding excursion elsewhere, in areas that might be better for their caterpillar food. Right now they will be chasing and mating with female Cuckoos (all our tagged birds are males).

PJ is back on his breeding grounds in Suffolk

27 Apr 2020
By 8pm last night PJ had arrived back in the King's Forest in Suffolk, just south west of Thetford. This marks the completion of PJ's fourth complete tracked migration cycle.

PJ heading home

25 Apr 2020
PJ didn't stop for long in the South Downs. Having arrived near the village of Treyford at around 4pm yesterday, by 8pm he was on the move again. By the time his last update arrived at 11pm last night he had flown a further 104 km (65 miles) north east and was near Nazeing in Essex. Hopefully when we receive the next update we will see that PJ is back on his breeding grounds in Suffolk again.

PJ touches down in England

24 Apr 2020
After a brief stop in the south of France, PJ has pressed on north, crossing the Channel and arriving in England this morning. By 3pm he was just north of Chichester and by early evening he had settled near the village of Treyford in the South Downs. Last year PJ arrived back in England on 26th April. We have now tracked PJ over four complete migrations between England and Africa.

PJ arrives in France

24 Apr 2020
Since our last update, PJ has pressed on, crossing the Pyrenees into southern France. His last known location was just north of the town of Mimizan in Nouvelle-Aquitaine in south-western France. When we receive our next update will PJ still be in France or might he already be back in England? Stay tuned to find out!

PJ making steady progress in Spain

21 Apr 2020
PJ has switched to a slower mode of migration since arriving in Spain but he is continuing to move north. By late last night he had flown 160 km (100 miles) north east from his last location, and was enjoying Sierra del Rincon, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve outside Madrid. The most recent update from PJ's tag place him in a river valley between La Hiruela and Puebla de la Sierra.

PJ reaches central Spain

17 Apr 2020
By yesterday evening, PJ had left Andalusia, flying 245 km (152 miles) north, over the Sierra Morena mountains and into central Spain. He is now close to the city of Talavera de la Reina and very close to an area he visited for a few days in 2019.

PJ has made it to Spain!

14 Apr 2020
PJ didn't hang around in Morocco, instead he has pressed on, traveling a further 577 km (358 miles) north over the Mediterranean to Spain. He is now in the Sierra de Hornachuelos Natural Park, close to Retortillo Reservoir in the province of Córdoba, Andalusia. PJ arrived back in the UK between 18 and 30 April in 2017, 2018 & 2019 so we expect him to be on the move again soon. It looks likely that he will be the first of our tagged Cuckoos to arrive back, unless one of the others makes a move very soon.

PJ as successfully crossed the Sahara

12 Apr 2020
A series of updates received from PJ's tag early this morning show that over the last 48 hours or so, he has covered another 1,226 km (762 miles) from his last location in Mauritania to his current location in Morocco. In total he has flown 2,840 km (1765 miles) since leaving his stop over location in Ivory Coast. He is now on the southern edge of Barrage Ahmed El Hansali (formerly Barrage Dchar El Oued), a lake on the river Oum Er Rbia at the northern foot of the Middle Atlas mountains near Khenifra. In previous years he has only spent a few days in Morocco before pressing on to Spain.

PJ crossing the Sahara!

10 Apr 2020
A series of updates from PJ's tag early this morning show that he has embarked on his desert crossing. Over the last few days he has left Ivory Coast and flown over the southwestern corner of Mali and into Mauritania. The latest update which arrived at 06:22 this morning showed that he has flown 1,825 km (1,134 miles) from Ivory Coast and is now in or over north western Mauritania. PJ was tagged in 2016 and in the three previous spring migrations he has crossed the desert further east, mostly over Mali. In previous years, he has made his desert crossing between 6 and 13 April, so he is right on schedule. The mean arrival data of Cuckoo in the UK is around 20th April and some have already been reported here. We will now keep our fingers crossed that when we receive the next update, PJ will have safely completed his desert crossing. Stay tuned!

PJ in Liberia

24 Mar 2020
Having arrived in Ivory Coast in late February, PJ has been moving around the country a fair bit, roaming from the eastern border to the western border and back towards the capital, Yamoussoukro. Over the last few days PJ has flown 396 km (246 miles) west and is now just over the border in Liberia. He is 10 km (6.2 miles) north west of the Ivory Coast town of Toulepleu. In previous years PJ has made his desert crossing between 6 and 13 April.

PJ restless in Ivory Coast

16 Mar 2020
Having flown further west in Ivory Coast, towards the borders with Liberia and Guinea, an update received this morning show that PJ has traveled 341 km (212 miles) east and is now 49 km (30 miles) north east of the capital Yamoussoukro, in central Ivory Coast. He is now in the general area from which he has departed on his desert crossing in several previous years, though based on data from pervious years we expect him to remain in Ivory Coast for a few weeks yet.

PJ in western Ivory Coast

09 Mar 2020
Sicne our last update PJ has flown a further 405 km (252 miles) west within Ivory Coast to his current location in western Ivory Coast. He is now 40 km (25 miles) west of Ivory Coast's third largest city, Daloa. He passed through this area in March 2018, before settling near Lake Kossou and crossing the Sahara on 6th April.

PJ goes west!

28 Feb 2020
Over the last ten days PJ has been blazing a trail across west Africa, starting in Cameroon and ending in Ivory Coast, a total distance of 1,733 km (1,077 miles). At 10am on Tuesday 25th February he was in Nigeria but he didn't hang around, as by 18:50 that day he had crossed over Benin and was in or over Togo. We next heard from him at 17:28 yesterday (27th Feb) when he was in western Ghana, near the border with Ivory Coast. The latest update which arrived late last night showed that PJ had made it into eastern Ivory Coast and was 58 km (36 miles) west of the Ghana - Ivory Coast border. PJ has stopped off in Ivory Coast during his northward migration in all previous years but he normally stops further west, nearer Lake Kossou. This is likely to be his last major stop before he attempts to cross the Sahara so it is important that he finds good feeding opportunities here. In previous years he has departed Ivory Coast between 6th and 13th April, so he is likely to remain here for several weeks before tackling the desert.

PJ still in Cameroon

21 Feb 2020
PJ hasn't moved far since arriving in Cameroon but information from his tag received during the last couple of days show he is alive and well. In previous years he has started the second leg of his journey around the end of February, so he could move west any day now.

PJ in Cameroon

24 Jan 2020
Over the last few days PJ has flown 269 km (167 miles) north west from Central African Republic into Cameroon. He is now in the mountainous Adamawa region of central Cameroon. In previous years PJ as stayed in Cameroon until the end of February/early March so we expect him to stay put for a few weeks before heading west to Ivory Coast.

PJ on the move again

15 Jan 2020
An update from PJ's tag yesterday morning shows that he has flown a further 432 km (268 miles) north-west from Gabon to a new location in the Nana-Mambéré region of The Central African Republic. He is close to the border with Cameroon and just south of the area he stopped in during his migration north in 2017. From here he is likely to move west into Cameroon and then continue through west Africa towards Ivory Coast where he stopped off in 2017, 2018 and 2019.

PJ heading North

06 Jan 2020
Between 22nd and 25th December, PJ flew 745 km (463 miles) north from his last location in northern Angola to his new location in eastern Gabon. This movement is similar in timing and direction to PJ's movements in 2017 when he moved to Gabon on 8th January and in 2018 when he moved to Gabon on 27th December. In previous years he has stayed in this area of Gabon until the end of January before moving further north, into Cameroon.

PJ in Angola again

16 Dec 2019
Since our last update PJ has flown further south as expected and is now in northern Angola, where he wintered in 2016, 2017 & 2018. He is just north-east of the capital Luanda and we expect him to remain here for a month or so, before beginning the first stage of his migration north again.

PJ in the Congo

04 Nov 2019
After a week in Cameroon, PJ has flown 687 km (427 miles) south to his current location in western Republic of the Congo. He is on the southern edge of the 13,500 Km2 Odzala National Park, one of Africa's oldest national parks, in the heart of the Congo Basin. We don't expect PJ to stay here for more than a week or two before progressing on to his wintering grounds in northern Angola.

PJ arrives in Cameroon

24 Oct 2019
Over the last few days PJ has left Nigeria and flown 1,288 km (800 miles) south east into Cameroon. He stopped briefly en-route just south of the Nigerian capital Abuja, before pressing on across the border into Cameroon. He is now in the Adamawa region of Cameroon and just north of the large Mbam Djerem National Park. He stopped in exactly the same area between 3 October and 20 November 2018 and visited close by on his spring migration earlier this year. We expect him to visit Congo next on his way to Angola where he usually over winters.

PJ set to move shortly?

25 Sep 2019
PJ has been in northern Nigeria since early August and, looking back at previous years data, could be on the move shortly to Cameroon. In the last couple of years he has arrived there in the first week of October,  later making his way south to winter in Angola. Keep watching this space!

A challenging autumn migration

04 Sep 2019

The last few weeks have been quiet and for those who had not yet completed their desert crossings, it looks like the challenging conditions have claimed more of our tagged Cuckoos.

Unfortunately no further signals have been received from Knepp. From the temperature data and movements at the time, he was alive on 12 July, when we last heard from his tag. Though the battery charge had been low for a few days, there is no evidence of long term battery decline so we can't be sure what has happened to him - either he, or the tag, appear to have died suddenly.

Lambert, who was still in France, has not moved on south and signals on 21 August showed high temperature fluctuations across the day, indicating the bird's body temperature and behaviour were not regulating it. We've heard nothing since then, and his tags battery charge had suddenly dipped, all of which leads us to believe he has likely died.

Unfortunately the challenging conditions have also impacted on Nussey who has already attempted two trips to Africa and retreated to Europe.  Abnormally low temperatures were received at the time of the last messages (16 August), having previously been fine. He was not migrating at that time, so the low temperatures were not due to high altitude, and the battery was also much lower than previously, further suggesting he was dead.

The droughts and exceptionally high temperatures in Europe appear to have proved difficult for our Cuckoos this year, however the five south of the Sahara are still regularly transmitting. Valentine, PJ, Carlton II and Tennysons' tags have all sent signals during September and the last signals received from Senan's tag were at the end of August and show him still in Burkina Faso.

PJ settled in Nigeria

21 Aug 2019
Since arriving on 5 August, PJ has stayed in the far north western corner of Nigeria, in Sokoto state. He is currently approximately 38 km (23 miles) south east of the city of Sokoto. This is an area which PJ also spent a couple of weeks in on his way south in 2017.

Five across the desert

14 Aug 2019
So far this year, five Cuckoos have made it successfully across the desert. Carlton II, PJ, Senan, Tennyson and Valentine are all south of the Sahara and still sending regular tag transmissions. They still have a little further to go south before reaching their final wintering destinations.

PJ in Nigeria

05 Aug 2019
Pj didn't stay long in Mali, he has since flown a further 598 km (372 miles) south east into north west Nigeria.

PJ in Mali

30 Jul 2019
PJ has continued on his desert crossing - not quite as far as 1000km as mentioned in the previous blog entry - but he did cover a further 635km (395 miles) on 29 July, which has taken him into eastern Mali. He is now close to the border with Niger, and just north of Reserve Partielle De Faune D'ansongo-Menaka.

PJ is crossing the desert!

29 Jul 2019

At 10:54 on Wednesday 24 July PJ was still in northern Spain but by 11:18 on Sunday 29 July he had flown 1,748 km (1,086 miles) south east and was in or over the desert in central Algeria. He has since flown a further 626 km (389 miles) south and by 04:30 this morning (29 July) he was at the western edge of the Tassili Oua-N-Ahaggar Desert in the Tamanrasset region of southern Algeria. He needs to travel another 1000 km (621 miles) or so in order to complete his desert crossing, hopefully when we next hear from him he'll be safely on the other side. In previous years PJ has stopped in Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger after crossing the Sahara.

PJ in Spain

09 Jul 2019

PJ left the UK on July 2 and has been making steady progress ever since. After a brief stop near Brionne in northern France he pressed on south and by 05:55 on July 4 he was 675 Km (420 miles) south, on the France/Spain border. He has since flown a further 208 Km (130 miles) south west to his current location near the city of Salas de los infantes in Burgos Province between Logrono, Soria and Burgos in Spain.

PJ already close to border with Spain

04 Jul 2019

PJ has departed – and while it looks like he is the last to leave - it appears he was already on his way before Carlton II. Poor quality signals, which don't display on the map, indicate he was close to Brionne in northern France around 7am on 2 July, 370km (235 miles) from Suffolk.

Good quality signals on the morning of 4 July revealed that PJ  was in the south of France, 685km (425 miles) further south close to the border with Spain.  He is now already over  1000km (600 miles) south of his breeding grounds!

PJ and Carlton II yet to leave

03 Jul 2019
Just PJ and Carlton II are yet to leave the UK. Three more Cuckoos have recently started on their migration, meaning a total of nine Cuckoos have departed this year already.

PJ still in King's Forest

19 Jun 2019
PJ has been faithful to his breeding site in King's Forest, Suffolk, since he arrived back in the UK. This is the fourth summer he has spent in this area since being fitted with a satellite tag. During his last three migrations he has left the UK between 24 June and 2 July - it will be interesting to see what date he leaves this year.

PJ settled

04 Jun 2019
PJ has settled into his territory since arriving back at the end of April. He seems to favour the northwest corner of King's Forest and the Berner's Heath area. During his last three southbound migrations he has left the UK between the 24 June and 3 July, so he is likely to still be in the forest for the next three weeks or so.

PJ is back!

26 Apr 2019
PJ completed the final leg of 645 Km (400 miles) of his return journey at 15:30 yesterday afternoon and is now back in the King's Forest in Suffolk. PJ was tagged in June 2016 so his successful return this year means that we have now tracked him over three complete migration loops from his breeding grounds near Thetford to his wintering grounds in Angola and back again. In previous years PJ has departed between June 23 and July 2 so we expect him to stay with us for around 9 weeks.

PJ isn't hanging around

23 Apr 2019
When his tag powered up on 18 April he was to the west of Madrid, central Spain. However, when his tag came on again around breakfast on 23 April he had left Spain and was in western France close to the town of La Roche-sur-Yon. This will automatically update on his map overnight. He is now only 658km (409 miles) from his Thetford Forest breeding site.

PJ is on his way

17 Apr 2019
During the last couple of days PJ has crossed the desert and is on his way back to the UK. A couple of poor quality locations received from his tag late in the evening on 16 April showed that he was crossing the Mediterranean east of the Strait of Gibraltar. We will have to wait until his tag powers on again late on 18 April to see where he makes landfall.

PJ has moved north

11 Apr 2019
Having spent the last couple of weeks to the south of Yamoussoukro, the capital of Ivory Coast, PJ is now just to the north of the city. This could be the start of his northward movement that will hopefully see him successfully cross the desert.

PJ still in Ivory Coast

04 Apr 2019
PJ is moving around southern central Ivory Coast and is currently to the west and south of the capital Yamoussoukro in an area of gallery forest.

PJ moves back west

20 Mar 2019
During the last few days PJ and headed back west. He has flown over 100km (65 miles) and is on the banks of the Nzi River to the south of Kassikankro. Presumably these movements are in search of better feeding conditions.

PJ going for it

08 Mar 2019

On Tuesday this week, PJ was still in Cameroon but he has since flown 2,085 Km (1,295 miles) west to Ivory Coast. He stopped briefly in Benin en-route. He is now 180 Km (111 miles) north west of the capital Yamoussoukro. We expect this to be PJ's last stop before he crosses the Sahara. In 2017 he left Ivory Coast to cross the Sahara on 8th April and in 2018 he departed on the 6th April.

PJ is heading west

06 Mar 2019

Having spent the last month in Cameroon PJ is now on his way west.  A couple of poor locations around breakfast on 5 March showed he was on the move and in western Cameroon. By mid-morning he was in central Nigeria and by the early evening had crossed the border into Benin, completing a journey of 897km (557 miles) in 12 hours. This puts his average speed for this journey at 46mph. He is currently in an area of open forest in southern, central Benin. His map will update automatically overnight to show his new position in Benin.

PJ still in Cameroon

25 Feb 2019

PJ has been in Cameroon for almost a month now. In 2017 he left Cameroon on 22 February and on the 23rd in 2018. We expect PJ to head into West Africa any day now.

PJ still south of Lake Mbakou

14 Feb 2019

PJ is still in the gallery forest to the south of Lake Mbakou but in the last couple of days he has moved a short distance to the west. It will be interesting to see when we next hear from his tag if this was the start of his journey into West Africa.

PJ continues north

07 Feb 2019
Around breakfast on 7 February, PJ's tag showed that he was in Cameroon. He is now over 1,500km (950 miles) from his winter location in Angola. He is currently in a area of wooded valleys on the northern edge of the Mbam et Djerem National Park, and to the south of Lake Mbakou.

PJ on his way back

29 Jan 2019

During the last few days we have received locations from PJ’s tag that show he is on his way back. He is now 754km (468 miles) north and east of his winter location in Angola and on the northern edge of the Teke Plateau.

PJ heads west

18 Jan 2019
PJ has left the Coutada do Ambriz reserve and headed west towards the Angolan coast. Having flown 32km (20 miles), he is now only 5km (3 miles) from the coast and just to the southeast of the coastal town of Ambriz

No move from PJ

03 Jan 2019
PJ is still settled pretty much in the middle of the Coutada do Ambriz Reserve in northwest Angola. He has been here for a couple of weeks now and, although we are receiving lots of information from his tag the furthest he has moved during this time is around 500 metres.

PJ moves further south

20 Dec 2018
PJ has moved a little further south and is now pretty much in the middle of the Coutada do Ambriz Reserve in fairly open forest. It is currently 24 degrees and he is on the southern edge of a large thunderstorm.

PJ moves further south

20 Dec 2018
PJ has moved a little further south and is now pretty much in the middle of the Coutada do Ambriz Reserve in fairly open forest. It is currently 24 degrees and he is on the southern edge of a large thunderstorm.

PJ moves south

11 Dec 2018
During the last week PJ has moved a little further south in Angola. He is currently on the northern edge of the Coutada do Ambriz Reserve, and further south than any of our other tagged cuckoos. As the crow flies he is almost 7,000km (just over 4,000 miles) from his East Anglian breeding site. This is the third time since he was fitted with his tag that he has wintered in Angola.

PJ has made it to Angola

30 Nov 2018
After leaving Cameroon, PJ spent around a week in eastern Gabon before moving south again, arriving at his mid-winter location in Angola on 30 November at just after 4.00am our time. During this period he has covered over 1,500km (900 miles). His map will update automatically during the day. This year he arrived here 13 days later than in 2016 and 7 days later than in 2017. He is now one of four of our tagged Cuckoos that are using the same area of northwest Angola.

PJ settled - for now

19 Nov 2018
PJ is still close to the town of Dir in Cameroon. He has been here for a month so we could see him move further south soon. In 2016 and 2017 he moved to Angola on 17 and 23 November respectively.

PJ has moved east

19 Oct 2018
Having spent almost six weeks in eastern Nigeria, PJ has now moved and is in northern Cameroon, in an area of wet forest to the north of the town of Dir. It will be interesting to see how long he stays here before moving south. In 2016 he headed south on 15 October and in 2017 on the 13th.

PJ has moved.

23 Aug 2018
Since crossing the desert, PJ has gone on a bit of a fly-around. He first moved south into Burkina Faso, then moved back north towards the border with Mali before turning east towards Niger and then south along the border with Niger and Burkina Faso. He is currently in eastermost Niger.

PJ Checks-in

02 Aug 2018
PJ's tag has come on early, probably due to it getting lots of sun during the desert crossing. A series of locations received from his tag during the evening of 1 August show that he continued his flight across the desert and made it to the Sahel. He is currently in Mali on the banks of the Niger River. It looks like the easterly winds did drift him a little west.

PJ is crossing the desert

01 Aug 2018
Around mid-afternoon on 31 August PJ's tag showed that he was crossing the desert and was about a third of the way across. We will have to wait until 3 August to see if he makes it. The winds in this part of the desert are currently from the southeast but much lighter than they have been. If he maintains his course he will arrive on the southern edge of the desert in Niger or Nigeria. The winds in the southern part of the desert are quite strong from the east right now and it might be that he gets drifted a little way to the west during the latter part of the crossing.

PJ on the move

13 Jul 2018
Having spent the last 6 days on the southern edge of the Pyrenees, PJ has moved. He is now 195km (121 miles) southwest of his previous location, and is to the west of Zaragoza. Might this be the start of his big push south?

PJ heading south

09 Jul 2018
PJ is in Spain - just. Around breakfast on 7 July locations from his tag showed he was in the Spanish Pyrenees, just to the north of Benasque. On his two previous migrations he launched his desert crossing from his stopover site in France, so it is interesting to see him crossing into Spain. It will also be interesting to see what he does next.

PJ has moved

03 Jul 2018

It seems that the area of farmland that PJ was using might not be giving him what he needs and he has moved back north 56km (35 miles) to the Orient Forest Regional Natural Park just to the east of Troyes.

The children of The Green Zone Bird Club at Sandown School in Kent have been following PJ’s progress closely. One of the children at the school, Che, won a Cuckoo sponsorship in the school fair and decided to share it with his fellow pupils. â€˜Where in the world is PJ?’ has been a regular activity where the children learn about geography and migration. One member of the Group, Callum (age 6), has taught everyone how to zoom in and out on PJ’s position on the satellite tracking map – well done, Callum!

They have all been drawing amazing pictures of PJ to welcome him back to the UK (featured). We have really enjoyed looking at their brilliant drawings in the office and reading the Green Zone Bird Club’s newsletters. Well done to all the children in the Club and to their Outdoor Learning and Forest School Leader, Anne Collins, for all of her hard work and enthusiasm. Keep up the good work children and we hope you continue following PJ's journey as he migrates back to Africa.

PJ has left the forest

26 Jun 2018
A series of locations received from PJ's tag on the evening of 23 June showed that he was no longer in Thetford Forest, Norfolk and that he was in northern France. He is currently in Burgundy, between Carisey and Tissey, an area of farmland interspersed with fairly large tracts of woodland.

PJ still in King's Forest

20 Jun 2018
PJ has remained faithful to the northern part of King's Forest, Suffolk, since his arrival here on 17 April. Having been seen several times in this location it seems he is frequenting areas of the forest that are being used by at least one female Cuckoo that appears to be watching the breeding Tree Pipits. As we are coming close to the end of the Tree Pipit breeding season he could well begin his journey south soon.

A glimpse of PJ

09 May 2018

Our very own Paul Stancliffe, Media Manager, got a great view of PJ this morning! He's not far from our Headquarters and Paul had been out to see if could locate him in preparation for some press coverage on the project. He said: 'I found him. It was the only Cuckoo I heard and saw and he flew straight towards me, before spotting me and turning away, showing his antenna as he did!'

PJ second Cuckoo to arrive home

17 Apr 2018
Just a matter of days after our first Cuckoo returned to the UK, PJ has also made the leap from France and was back in his breeding grounds in King’s Forest, Suffolk area by the morning of the 17 April.  He is earlier than in 2017 when he arrived back on 27 April.

Will PJ or Selborne be back first?

12 Apr 2018
With both PJ and Selborne in France, the bets are on as to which will be the first back to the UK. While Selborne was the first to arrive in Europe, PJ has now leap-frogged his last location and is further north and closer to home. The weather looks set to take a turn for the better this weekend so perhaps they will time their arrivals to coincide with the arrival of spring!

PJ leading the pack

09 Apr 2018
Around mid-morning on 8 April we received a couple of locations that showed PJ was in France, 1,863km (1,150 miles) north of his last location in Morocco. His last location in Morocco was at 23.21 on Friday 6 April. He is currently just north of Redon, 553km (343 miles) from Kings Forest, Suffolk where he was tagged in June 2016. It will be interesting to see how long he needs to recover before heading back to his tagging site.

PJ has crossed the desert

06 Apr 2018
Around lunctime on 6 April we received locations from PJ's tag that showed he had successfully crossed the Sahara. He is currently in Morocco just west of Meknes. It will be interesting to see how long he stays here, it could only be a few days and by early next week he may well be in Spain, resting before he completes the final leg of his journey back to the UK.

Selborne and PJ head east

13 Mar 2018

After having travelled so far west, two of our Cuckoos have turned around and gone eastwards. From the Guinea Highlands, Selborne has travelled north-eastwards 125km (80 miles) while PJ has also headed east 190km (115 miles) within Ivory Coast. This may be to do with conditions being more favourable here.

PJ moves into West Africa

28 Feb 2018
PJ is the second of our tagged Cuckoos this year to move into West Africa!  By the evenng of 22 February he had covered a distance of 1230km (765 miles) west and was in Togo but, new signals received yesterday morning, show he has continued 960km (600 miles) further to Ivory Coast. He is in the west of Ivory Coast, 165km (just over 100 miles) east of Selborne in Guinea. This could be where he prepares for his desert crossing, as he did last year, crossing in early April.

PJ moves onto Cameroon

24 Jan 2018
New signals on the afternoon of 22 January show that PJ was continuing northwards and had made it 800km (just under 500 miles) north from Gabon to reach Cameroon. He is just north of the Mbam et Djerem National Park.

PJ moving north

03 Jan 2018
PJ is already on the move northwards. From Angola on the 22 January, he travelled 755km (470 miles) in a north-easterly direction to get back to Gabon by the evening of 26 December. In 2016/17 his behaviour was similar, heading north from Angola to the centre of the Republic of Congo in the second week of January and moving on again north by the end of January. It's the beginning of his long journey home.

PJ in Angola

22 Nov 2017
As expected PJ has continued southwards. By 12 November he was just east of the Crystal Mountains in southern Congo and by 16 Nov he was in the Zaire region in northern Angola. Signals on 19 Nov revealed a further southerly movement of 160km (almost 100 miles) to the Coutada do Ambriz reserve. In total he has moved over 890km (590 miles) from his location on 14 November. He may still go a little further within Angola, as last year saw him venture to the Parc Nacional da Quicama, 170km (110 miles) further south.

PJ moves south

14 Nov 2017
PJ has moved 290km (180 miles) south within Congo in the last week and is now in the Lekoumou region, 40 miles south of Bateke Plateau National Park. Last year he was in Angola by the 25 October and remained there until January so we expect him to continue moving south to reach the same area.

PJ in the Congo

19 Oct 2017
PJ has headed south and is now in the lowland forests of the Congo Basin, within Congo. He has covered around 590km (366 miles) from his previous location in the Central African Republic.

PJ head east

10 Oct 2017
PJ has continued quickly onwards flying 290km (180 miles) in an easterly direction which has taken him into the Central African Republic. He is still just north of the Congo Basin area.

PJ in Cameroon

03 Oct 2017
From Niger, PJ has traveled 1390km (860 miles) south east to Cameroon! He is just south of the Mbam et Djerem National Park and almost in the Congo Basin area, which covers the southern half of Cameroon and spans across six countries - Cameroon, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea and Gabon. We expect him to move south into the Congo Basin over the next few weeks.

PJ moves north

05 Sep 2017
PJ has moved 155km (95 miles) north from Nigeria into Niger, back to the area he was in around the middle of July.

PJ in Nigeria

10 Aug 2017
PJ has travelled  250km (160 miles) from Niger and is now in northern Nigeria.

No movement from PJ

26 Jul 2017
PJ hasn't moved far but he seems to have found a river delta, where presumably there is water and vegetation at this time of year.

PJ crossing the Sahara

17 Jul 2017
At 19:23 on Friday 14 July we received a location from PJ's tag that showed he was close to the coast of southern France to the west of Toulon. At 20:45 he was 46km (28 miles) to the south of here and over the sea. The last location we received before his tag powered down was at 01:41 on 15 July and he was about half-way through his crossing of the Mediterranean. We next heard from him at 16.14 on 16 July when he was in the middle of the Sahara in southern Algeria. He didn't stop here, and by 08:53 on 17 July he was in Niger and around 500km (350 miles) short of successfully completing his desert crossing. Between Friday evening and early on Monday morning, he travelled 2,900km (1,800 miles) at an average speed of 47kph (30mph). Fingers crossed, when we next hear from his tag he will have completed his desert crossing.

PJ on the move

13 Jul 2017
PJ has moved south within France and is now now on the border with France and Switzerland, north-west of Geneva and south of Lake Geneva itself. He is currently moving around an area of woodland to the south of Loisin. He is 65km (40 miles) northwest of where the French, Swiss and Italian borders meet in the Alps.

PJ crosses the Channel

28 Jun 2017

PJ has started his migration towards Africa for the winter. He left his breeding territory in Thetford Forest on the Norfolk/Suffolk border on the 24th June stopping over in NE France. He is currently in woodland west of Lachaussee, 525km (326 miles) southeast of his summer location.

PJ still close to his tagging site

23 May 2017
Since arriving back in the King's Forest on the Suffolk/Norfolk border, PJ has ranged quite widely in the area and has visited the BTO's Nunnery Lakes on a few occasions. For the last few days he has been frequenting the area just north of the Elveden Memorial.

PJ returns to UK

02 May 2017
PJ has returned back to his breeding area, transmitting from Suffolk on 29 April.  He covered the 495 km (305 miles) from his previous location in France during the late evening of 27 into 28 April. Since he arrived he has been moving around the Thetford and Mildenhall area, close to Kings Forest where he was tagged. He is the second of our tagged Cuckoos to make it back this year.

PJ in northern France

26 Apr 2017
PJ has flown from southern Spain to northern France, covering 1,300km (805 miles). Signals received on 21 April showed PJ crossing the Bay of Biscay and by the afternoon of 22 April he was 35km (20 miles) west of Le Mans.

PJ in Spain

13 Apr 2017
Not to be outdone, PJ has also continued onwards, and from the High Atlas Mountains in Morocco he has traveled 650km (400 miles) to Spain. Poor quality locations indicate that he is currently south west of Seville. Once we receive further good quality locations his position will update on the map. Having just crossed the desert, PJ isn’t likely to move too far at the moment but you never know! Will he be the next Cuckoo back?

PJ has crossed the Sahara

11 Apr 2017
Locations received from PJ's tag during the early morning on 10 April showed that he was on the southern edge of the High Atlas Mountains in Morocco, and that he had successfully completed his desert crossing. He is currently close to the village of Ait Aamamou.

PJ settled in Ivory Coast

06 Mar 2017
Locations received from PJ's tag on 5 March show that he is still in the area of Ivory Coast that he arrived in on 22 February. He is moving around small patches of forest just to the west of Lac de Kossou.

PJ's mammoth journey

22 Feb 2017
Having been in Cameroon until the late afternoon of 17 February, PJ has since travelled 2020km (1255 miles) and, as of the early hours of the morning of the 22 February, was in Ivory Coast. This large movement has taken just four and a half days! PJ is the second Cuckoo who has made a rapid westerly movement, also moving much further west than we normally see at this time of year.

PJ in Cameroon

25 Jan 2017
PJ has travelled 400km (250 miles) and is now in Cameroon. He is currently north of Boumba Bek National Park and is the most northerly Cuckoo.

PJ continues on north

17 Jan 2017
PJ has moved north and is currently in the central Congo rainforest close to Tsongo-Pa. He has been there since 8 January but we have received no further signals since then. This is likely because he is beneath the rainforest canopy and the solar panel on his tag is unable to charge the tag batteries very well.

PJ heads north

06 Dec 2016
At  the beginning of December PJ made a relatively large movement northwards, travelling 280km (175 miles). He is now in the same area of Angola as four of the other Cuckoos, with just 215km (135 miles) separating the most northerly from the most southerly within Angola. Larry and Bill, who are closest to each other, are separated by only a few miles.

PJ joins those in Angola

09 Nov 2016
Having skipped into the Republic of Congo on the 18 October, PJ was in the south of the country by the eve of 24 October. Just a few days later on the 27 he had covered a further 495km (310 miles) to reach northern Angola.  He continued on, almost directly south, and by the 2 November was just south of the Cuanza River and the town of Donde.  He joins Larry, 161324 and Bill who are all also in Angola.

PJ continues south

18 Oct 2016
From Nigeria, PJ has continued onwards, heading south to reach a location in Cameroon, some 560km(350 miles) away by lunchtime on 13 October.  Forty eight hours late and he was 400km ( 250 miles) further to the south-east and near to both Nki and Boumba National Parks.

PJ in Nigeria

12 Oct 2016
PJ has left Niger and, by the 11 October, had travelled 690km (430 miles) to Nigeria. He is currently 75km (45 miles) south of Abuja, the capital city of Nigeria. We don't yet know where PJ will spend the mid-winter months but he is still around 1,300km (800 miles) from the area in central Congo where quite a few of our birds do.

PJ still in southern Niger

05 Oct 2016
Although PJ is still in the area he arrived in in southern Niger, he does seem to be moving around a series of creeks and areas with sparse tree cover. There are also small areas of cultivation too, so it may be a good stopover site, if a little drier than most of our Cuckoos choose. Looking at what the other birds are doing, it might not be too long before PJ begins to head east.

PJ settled

19 Sep 2016
Locations receievd from PJ on 19 September show that he is still settled in southern Niger.

No movement from PJ

06 Sep 2016
Since arriving in southern Niger PJ has settled on the edge of a small river valley to the east of the town of Bouza. The habitat in the valley is semi-arid with sparse trees but the river banks are fairly well vegetated, so PJ may be able to use this area as his stopover site before heading south and east into Congo.

PJ moves east

26 Aug 2016
Since crossing the desert and arriving in southern Mali, PJ has continued east along the southern edge of the desert and is now in neighbouring Niger, close to the border with Nigeria.

PJ crosses the Sahara

02 Aug 2016
Since leaving France on 22nd July, Norfolk Cuckoo PJ has taken a very direct route south, travelling 1,600 miles due South into Algeria and the pressing on for another 660 miles to arrive at his current location in eastern Mali. He is the third tagged Cuckoo to successfully cross the desert and is currently near the D'ansongo-Menaka nature reserve close to the border with Niger. This is an area previously visited by Whortle.

PJ in France

08 Jul 2016
A series of locations received from PJ on 2 July showed that he had left Suffolk, crossed the North Sea and was on Belgian/French border, close to Bogny-sur-Meuse in France. Two days later he had moved 119km (74 miles) further south. He is currently in an area of forest south of Verdun.

PJ

23 Jun 2016

PJ was tagged on 7 June 2016 in King's Forest, Suffolk. Since then he has remained largely in the area of the forest, although he has ventured north into Thetford Forest, on the Norfolk/Suffolk border, and east into Norfolk to the area of forest between Thetford and Diss. He is currently back in Suffolk and on the southern edge of Thetford Forest, very close to Elveden.
