Updates on Peckham 's movements

Silence from Peckham

09 May 2018

Peckham remains in Africa and, worryingly, we've not had any signals from him since he first moved from Gabon to the forest of Cameroon on 8 April. We appear to have lost contact due to low battery charge. According to the limited sensor data we have for his tag in the period preceding that, there was no reason to be concerned about his welfare at that time. Last year, he left West Africa really late (later than now!) so it's possible he's lurking there now having moved on from Cameroon. It's also possible that his tag's battery is damaged and we won't hear from it again, or even that he has since dead. We will have to wait to see if further signals are received.

When will Peckham start his journey?

26 Apr 2018
Of those Cuckoos we continue to track, just Peckham remains in Africa. How will his late arrival to Africa affect his journey back and when might we expect him to return?

Peckham hasn't moved far

06 Apr 2018
Peckham has left Gabon but has only moved into Cameroon. We last heard from in on 1 April and things look to be OK with him. If all is well we would expect him to start heading west any day now. He is currently in the Dja Faunal Reserve, one of the most undisturbed pieces of African rainforest.

Peckham in Gabon

03 Jan 2018
By the early morning of January 1, Peckham had arrived in Gabon, 570km (355 miles) south-west from his last location in the Central African Republic. His new location in the Haut-Ogooue region is just 55km (35 miles) away from PJ who has moved north from Angola, where he has spent some of this winter. Peckham has spent the last two winters in and and around this area in Gabon so we don't expect much further movement from him, now that he is in his wintering grounds.

Peckham moves to Central African Republic

20 Dec 2017
Peckham has moved on from southern Chad where he has spent the last seven or so weeks and has journeyed 460km (295 miles). He is in the Mambere-Kadei region. In previous years he has continued on during December to the Congo Basin area and into Gabon. We are very pleased that despite his very late migration this year he is now close to the heart of the rainforest. Well done Peckham!

Peckham in southern Chad

31 Oct 2017

Signals show that by the late afternoon of 26 October, Peckham had covered 1,640km (1020 miles) across Libya and Niger and was around the Niger/Chad border, north of Lake Chad. A few hours later and he had continued further south to Lake Chad. His desert crossing was over and he could spend some time refuelling after his long journey.

His tag next switched on in the early hours of 29 October to reveal he had continued onwards, 575km (360 miles) south-east and was in the Logone Occidental area in the south of Chad. The Congo rainforest is now very much within his reach! Well done Peckham!

Peckham finally makes it to Africa!

25 Oct 2017

A little later than usual, but Peckham has made it to Africa! On the 23 October transmissions showed that Peckham was on his way south again, and by late afternoon was 505k (315 miles) further than his last position near Milan, and just a little further south than Rome. From here he flew 1210km (750 miles) across the Mediterranean Sea to reach the coast of Libya by the early afternoon of 24 October.

This is a very similar route to previous years, where he has left Italy for Libya and then headed onwards to Chad. In 2015, when he embarked on this same trip, he made it to Libya by early August, in 2016 it was early September and this year he is later again - in fact the latest arrival to Africa of any Cuckoos we have tracked! We are really pleased to see him have made it this far so late but he is not out of danger yet. He still has quite a way to travel to make it across the desert and find a suitable stop where there will be the necessary resources he needs to rest and refuel after such a long and strenuous journey. If he was in good condition when he left he will have more chance of making this successfully.

Peckham moves to Italy

10 Oct 2017
By the 8 October, Peckham had traveled to a location 32km(20 miles) south-east of Milan, Italy, having flown around 245km (150 miles) from his previous location in Switzerland. If he makes it to Africa from here, he will be the latest arrival to Africa of all the tracked Cuckoos since the project began. The previous record was 3 October. Hopefully he is not too late to complete his journey successfully and become a record breaker for the project.

Peckham in Switzerland

26 Sep 2017
A signal on 22 September shows Peckham continued on his way south from his last locations in Belgium and then France to reach Switzerland where he has remained for at least a couple of days. He is north-west of Stockholm, on the southern edge of the Gantrisch Nature Park, a mountainous area which includes many lakes. He also visited Switzerland in 2015, although was further to the north-east. He's still got a way to go to reach his wintering grounds but at least he is on his way!

Peckham looks to be on the move

20 Sep 2017

A series of signals show Peckham is finally moving south. The last good signal showed him over the Ardennes Mountains in the south of Belgium but further locations of poorer quality indicate he continued on into northern France.

We've been following Peckham for a number of years and can see by the 20 September in both 2015 and 2016, Peckham was already in Africa and as far south as Chad. His journey this year has varied considerably from these!

He was one of the latest to arrive in Africa last year, with the first transmission received from Africa on 9 September. Throughout the project only three birds have arrived later than this, with two in mid-September and Lloyd, one of our Welsh birds tagged in 2012, not transmitting from Africa until 3 October that year.

Despite arriving late last year his onward journey to reach Chad was fairly quick. Hopefully conditions will be favourable on the way south. We hope we will soon see him in Africa, all being well.

Peckham leaves the UK

15 Aug 2017
Peckham has left the UK and headed 290km (180 miles) to Belgium. This is his second attempt to leave, the first of which was thwarted by heavy rain. In previous years his first transmission outside of the UK have come from Switzerland and The Netherlands. He is currently moving around the area between Lummen and Diest. Having spent longer than usual in the UK we may see him move on quite speedily.

Peckham stopping over in East Anglia

26 Jul 2017
Peckham appears to be undertaking a stopover in East Anglia rather than NW Europe as in previous years after his attempt to leave the UK was aborted due to the bad weather in early July. In previous years he has left the UK on 1 July and 27 June (2015 and 2016 respectively).

Peckham is on his way

13 Jul 2017
Peckham's last location close to Nottingham was on 7 July, however, when we next heard from him on 9 July he had moved 149km (93 miles) in a south easterly direction and was close to Hoddesdon in Hertfordshire. Two days later Peckham's tag began transmitting again and he was on the east coast in Suffolk, close to Ipswich. The weather at the time was appalling with almost constant heavy rain. It might have been that Peckham was going to attempt to cross the North Sea but instead, probably as a consequence of the rain, he began moving up the Suffolk coast and by the early evening had settled close to the Norfolk border near Ringsfield. It would seem that the rain thwarted his exit from the UK and we will have to wait until we hear from him again to see if he has been able to continue on his journey south.

Peckham getting ready to leave?

30 Jun 2017
Peckham has left his breeding grounds and as of the evening of 28 June was just south of Nottingham. Might he be the next to leave?

Peckham in the Yorkshire Dales

05 Jun 2017
Peckham is back in the Yorkshire Dales just to the west of Sedburgh, in the area that he was tagged in May 2015. He is currently spending most of his time close to Lily Mere.

Peckham back in the UK

23 May 2017
Locations received from Peckham's tag on 21 May showed that he was back in the UK and that he was close to the Gloucestershire/Herefordshire border, between Aston Ingham and Little Gorsley. However, we received a series of poor locations on 22 May that showed he was on his way back to the Yorkshire Dales, and when we next hear from his tag we expect him to be back at his tagging location near Sedbergh.

Peckham moves north

09 May 2017
Signals on May 7 show that Peckham had embarked on his desert crossing and was in the Sahara desert. When the tag switched off he hadn't yet completed the crossing. However, signals received in the last few hours show he has successfully reached Spain and completed his desert crossing. The map should update shortly to show him in the Sierra Morena Mountains.

Peckham moving west

18 Apr 2017
During the last few days Peckham has been heading west. Around lunchtime on 16 April his tag gave a series of locations from Ghana. He is currently in an area of fairly open forest midway between Chiranda and Saronoase in western Ghana.

Peckham crosses into Nigeria

04 Apr 2017
Peckham has left Cameroon and crossed the border into Nigeria, travelling 390km (240 miles) west to a location just south of the city of Abakaliki.

Peckham moves north

14 Mar 2017
Since arriving in Cameroon, Peckham has moved a further 273km (169 miles) north and is now in northern Cameroon. He is currently in fairly dense forest just north of Oue.

Peckham heading north and west

06 Mar 2017
Peckham is currently in fairly dense forest in southern Cameroon. It might not be too long before he makes his move west into West Africa and begins the long journey back to the UK.

Peckham in Congo

24 Jan 2017
In the last few days Peckham has journeyed a short distance of 90km (just over 50 miles) north east and is now in the Republic of Congo. He is one of several Cuckoos to begin heading north.

Peckham in last year's wintering location

06 Dec 2016
Peckham has moved 90km (55 miles) south and is now in the same area where he spent last winter, close to Okandja in Gabon.

Peckham heads south

23 Nov 2016
Peckham has finally moved further south, and closer to the other Cuckoos. After a journey of 940km (580 miles) he has left the Central African Republic and is (just) within the borders of Gabon. Last year he also wintered in Gabon, at a location slightly further southwest. His recent movement is over a month later than last year's arrival date in Gabon.  It will be interesting to see whether he heads to the same location as last year, or if he moves even further south, which may give more weight to the idea that conditions are drier and less favourable in Gabon and areas of the Congo rainforest this year.

Peckham furthest north

09 Nov 2016
Peckham is our only satellite tagged Cuckoo still north of the Equator. He is still in southern Chad, very close to the border with Central African Republic, and still 1,000km (626 miles) northeast of his 2015 winter location in Gabon. In 2015 he arrived in Gabon on 8 October, so he is currently running around a month late. His tag data suggests that all is well with him, so he could move south any day now.

Peckham still in southern Chad

05 Oct 2016
Peckham is still in the area of southern Chad in which he arrived in mid-September, although over the last few days he did undertake a 146km (90 miles) round trip into the Manda National Park, only to return to his stopover site. Perhaps this is in preparation for his push south into the Congo rainforest? Only time will tell.

Peckham crosses the desert

19 Sep 2016
It seems that Peckham had started his desert crossing on 6 September, as when we next heard from him on 9 September he was in southern Libya and about half-way across the desert. By the early hours of 11 September he had successfully crossed and was in northern Cameroon. He has sinced moved east and is currently in southern Chad.

Peckham still in Italy

06 Sep 2016
Last year Peckham left northern Italy on 30 July and by 9 September was in Chad on the southern edge of the desert, so it is a little worrying that he is still so far north. A look at his tag data suggests that everything is ok, although the battery charge is a little low. Surprisingly, there is a very poor quality location for 6 September that suggests he is in Sicily. We will need better quality locations to confirm this but if it is the case Peckham may well have started his desert crossing - several of our Cuckoos make a direct flight across the desert from northern Italy. Watch this space.

Peckham still in the Po Valley

26 Aug 2016
Peckham is still settled in the stopover site that he used last year, however, he has lingered for almost a month longer this time. We are not sure why this is the case as this is only the second migration that Peckham has undertaken wearing a satellite tag. It might be that last year was unusual, or indeed that this year is the unusual one, so it is hard to draw conclusions at this stage. We do know that in 2015 the region suffered a severe drought which might have moved Peckham on early, only time will tell what is a normal departure date for him.

Peckham in the Po valley

12 Jul 2016
On 10 July Peckham arrived in the Po valley in northern Italy. This is the same area in which he carried out his stopover last year, arriving here in 2015 on 4 July. In 2015 he remained in the area until 29 July.

Peckham in Germany

08 Jul 2016
A location received from Peckham on 27 June showed that he had left the UK and was in the Netherlands, close to the border with Germany. He has since crossed the border and is currently on the banks of the Rhine, just north of Vynen.

Peckham is on his way

27 Jun 2016
At 6pm on 21 June, Peckham was still at his tagging site close to Kendal, Cumbria but by breakfast on 22 June he had flown 173km (107 miles) south and east and was just north of Lincoln, but he didn't stay here long, by mid-afternoon on 24 June he was even further south and east and was in Norfolk just west of Great Yarmouth.

Peckham still close to Kendal

16 Jun 2016

Since arriving in the area just east of Kendal, Peckham has remained settled here. During the late evening on 15 June he was 8km (5 miles) southeast of Kendal, and just north of Killington Reservoir and Lily Mere.

Peckham in Cumbria

04 May 2016

Peckham seems to have settled in Cumbria, on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. He is currently 8km (5 miles) east of Kendal.

Peckham back in Yorkshire

29 Apr 2016

In the last 24 hours Peckham has completed the last leg of his spring migration – travelling the final 170 miles from Gloucestershire to the Yorkshire Dales. He is now back at his breeding grounds, just east of Kendal and on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. In 2015 he started his autumn migration on 30th June, so we expect him to stay at his current location for the next two months.

Peckham back in England

27 Apr 2016

This morning, David Peckham became the second of our tagged birds to make it back to the UK, although he is not yet back at his tagging location in the Yorkshire Dales. Peckham departed northern Africa on 20 April and has made rapid progress to his current location near Painswick in Gloucestershire.

Peckham has crossed the Desert

18 Apr 2016

A location received from Peckham's tag during the morning of 10 April showed that he had crossed the Sahara. He was in southern Tunisia, just south of Tataouine, the Tataouine of Star Wars fame. A couple of poor quality locations received during the afternoon of 14 April show that he continued north across the Mediterranean and had made it on to the island of Corsica. We will have to wait for good quality locations to confirm this but we believe it to be the case. This would make Peckham our most northerly tagged cuckoo at this stage in their migration.

Peckham unmoved - for now

05 Apr 2016

Locations received from Peckham on 29 March show that he has been in the same area of Ivory Coast for 21 days. It will remain to be seen how much longer he stays there. It could be that he will be the next Cuckoo to cross the desert, only time will tell.

Peckham out in front

24 Mar 2016

Since arriving in Ivory Coast Peckham seems fairly settled. A series of poor quality locations recieved from his tag on 22 March show that he is still in the same area that he arrived in on 8 March. He is currently ahead of all of our other tagged Cuckoos, but only just; Stanley is only 17km (10 miles) behind him.

Peckham not hanging around

10 Mar 2016

Peckham didn't stay long in Benin. A series of high quality locations received from him during the evening of 8 March show that he has continued west, flying through Togo and Ghana into Ivory Coast, and is 697km (433 miles) west of his last location in Benin. He is also further west than any of the other tagged Cuckoos - so far. He is currently in riverine forest between the vilages of Satama-Sokoura, Kakarakro and Dabokrira, and 160km (100 miles) northeast of the capital Yamoussoukro.

Peckham heads west

07 Mar 2016

After popping up in Nigeria, Peckham hasn't hung around. At around 09.30 on the morning of 4 March, we received a location that showed he had moved 603km (374 miles) further west and was in Benin, 34km (21 miles) from the border with Togo.

He's alive!

02 Mar 2016

We last heard form Peckham over a month and a half ago, and, whilst he seemed to be alive at the time, we were beginning to get concerned. A location received from him during the early evening on March 1 showed that not only was he alive, he was on his way back to the UK! He is currently in Nigeria 55km (34.5 miles) east of the River Niger and 213km (131 miles) south of the capital, Abuja.

No news from Peckham

24 Feb 2016

We last heard from Peckham on 13 January. At that time everything seemed OK. He was alive and well and his tag was in good working order. We hope that he has moved into deeper cover, as it seems some of our other Cuckoos have done in the past at this time of the year, and that he will 'pop-up' in the next few weeks when he begins to move again.

No movement from Peckham

20 Jan 2016

We last heard from Peckham on 13 January. The location recieved showed that he was still in the area of Gabon in which he has spent most of the winter. Hopefully we will get an update from him soon.

Peckham still in Gabon

05 Nov 2015

A location received on 26 October showed that Peckham was still in Gabon and in the area he first arrived in on 3 October. It will be interesting to see where he goes from here as non of our tagged Cuckoos have spent the winter in Gabon before.

Peckham in Gabon

08 Oct 2015

Since the 3 October, Peckham has left Chad and been slowly travelling further south, covering 1300km ( 810 miles)  to reach a new location in the Gabon, in the the depths of the Congo Rainforest by the early morning of 8 October.  Three of our other tagged Cuckoos are also in the rainforest, although they are further east in Democratic Republic of Congo.

Peckham moves south

07 Aug 2015

Peckham had us worried there for a moment before delighting us when his tag sent a signal on 7 August, showing he has travelled south a further 370km (230 miles) into Chad.  He still faces many challenges so lets hope he arrives safely in the central Sahel region.

Peckham still in desert

05 Aug 2015

Peckham has remained in the desert in Chad since his tag first transmitted from there on 1 August. We were quite worried that he may have persished while trying to cross however a quick look at the recent weather conditions in his location in the Tibesti Mountains revealed that the area has had about half an inch of rain in the last week! This may explain why he has stopped there, in what would normally be a rather strange move for any of our Cuckoos. Hopefully he continues onwards shorlty and makes it successfully to south of the Sahara!

Peckham arrives in Chad

03 Aug 2015

Peckham has left Italy, flown over the Mediterranean and arrived in Africa. Passing through Libya he completed a journey of 1900 kilometres (1,175 miles) to reach northern Chad, arriving near the Emi Koussi volcano. He still has a way to go to complete his desert crossing and reach a location in southern Chad where he can rest and refuel safely.

Peckham heads south

30 Jul 2015

From Northern Italy, Peckham has flown 930km (575 miles) southeast to a location in the toe of Italy, close to Bovalino, in the region of Calabria.

Peckham in Italy

06 Jul 2015

From Switzerland, David Peckham continued south-east and onto the Lombardy region of Italyby the 4 July.

David Peckham in Switzerland

03 Jul 2015

David Peckham is on his way. A signal around 9.00pm on 1 July showed he had left the UK and was in Lorraine, northeastern France. He continued south east and, by 03.24 on 2 July was in Switzerland, close to Eschenbach.

(David) Peckham is on his way.

01 Jul 2015

Newly named Cuckoo, David Peckham, is on his way. He has left his tagging site in the Yorkshire Dales and is currently in Suffolk, 11km (7 miles) south of the BTO headquarters.
