Peckham's journey from 23rd May 2015 to 1st April 2018
Updates on Peckham 's movements
Silence from Peckham
Peckham remains in Africa and, worryingly, we've not had any signals from him since he first moved from Gabon to the forest of Cameroon on 8 April. We appear to have lost contact due to low battery charge. According to the limited sensor data we have for his tag in the period preceding that, there was no reason to be concerned about his welfare at that time. Last year, he left West Africa really late (later than now!) so it's possible he's lurking there now having moved on from Cameroon. It's also possible that his tag's battery is damaged and we won't hear from it again, or even that he has since dead. We will have to wait to see if further signals are received.
When will Peckham start his journey?
Peckham hasn't moved far

Peckham in southern Chad
Signals show that by the late afternoon of 26 October, Peckham had covered 1,640km (1020 miles) across Libya and Niger and was around the Niger/Chad border, north of Lake Chad. A few hours later and he had continued further south to Lake Chad. His desert crossing was over and he could spend some time refuelling after his long journey.
His tag next switched on in the early hours of 29 October to reveal he had continued onwards, 575km (360 miles) south-east and was in the Logone Occidental area in the south of Chad. The Congo rainforest is now very much within his reach! Well done Peckham!
Peckham finally makes it to Africa!
A little later than usual, but Peckham has made it to Africa! On the 23 October transmissions showed that Peckham was on his way south again, and by late afternoon was 505k (315 miles) further than his last position near Milan, and just a little further south than Rome. From here he flew 1210km (750 miles) across the Mediterranean Sea to reach the coast of Libya by the early afternoon of 24 October.
This is a very similar route to previous years, where he has left Italy for Libya and then headed onwards to Chad. In 2015, when he embarked on this same trip, he made it to Libya by early August, in 2016 it was early September and this year he is later again - in fact the latest arrival to Africa of any Cuckoos we have tracked! We are really pleased to see him have made it this far so late but he is not out of danger yet. He still has quite a way to travel to make it across the desert and find a suitable stop where there will be the necessary resources he needs to rest and refuel after such a long and strenuous journey. If he was in good condition when he left he will have more chance of making this successfully.

Peckham looks to be on the move
A series of signals show Peckham is finally moving south. The last good signal showed him over the Ardennes Mountains in the south of Belgium but further locations of poorer quality indicate he continued on into northern France.
We've been following Peckham for a number of years and can see by the 20 September in both 2015 and 2016, Peckham was already in Africa and as far south as Chad. His journey this year has varied considerably from these!
He was one of the latest to arrive in Africa last year, with the first transmission received from Africa on 9 September. Throughout the project only three birds have arrived later than this, with two in mid-September and Lloyd, one of our Welsh birds tagged in 2012, not transmitting from Africa until 3 October that year.
Despite arriving late last year his onward journey to reach Chad was fairly quick. Hopefully conditions will be favourable on the way south. We hope we will soon see him in Africa, all being well.

Peckham still close to Kendal
Since arriving in the area just east of Kendal, Peckham has remained settled here. During the late evening on 15 June he was 8km (5 miles) southeast of Kendal, and just north of Killington Reservoir and Lily Mere.
Peckham in Cumbria
Peckham seems to have settled in Cumbria, on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. He is currently 8km (5 miles) east of Kendal.
Peckham back in Yorkshire
In the last 24 hours Peckham has completed the last leg of his spring migration – travelling the final 170 miles from Gloucestershire to the Yorkshire Dales. He is now back at his breeding grounds, just east of Kendal and on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. In 2015 he started his autumn migration on 30th June, so we expect him to stay at his current location for the next two months.
Peckham back in England
This morning, David Peckham became the second of our tagged birds to make it back to the UK, although he is not yet back at his tagging location in the Yorkshire Dales. Peckham departed northern Africa on 20 April and has made rapid progress to his current location near Painswick in Gloucestershire.
Peckham has crossed the Desert
A location received from Peckham's tag during the morning of 10 April showed that he had crossed the Sahara. He was in southern Tunisia, just south of Tataouine, the Tataouine of Star Wars fame. A couple of poor quality locations received during the afternoon of 14 April show that he continued north across the Mediterranean and had made it on to the island of Corsica. We will have to wait for good quality locations to confirm this but we believe it to be the case. This would make Peckham our most northerly tagged cuckoo at this stage in their migration.
Peckham unmoved - for now
Locations received from Peckham on 29 March show that he has been in the same area of Ivory Coast for 21 days. It will remain to be seen how much longer he stays there. It could be that he will be the next Cuckoo to cross the desert, only time will tell.
Peckham out in front
Since arriving in Ivory Coast Peckham seems fairly settled. A series of poor quality locations recieved from his tag on 22 March show that he is still in the same area that he arrived in on 8 March. He is currently ahead of all of our other tagged Cuckoos, but only just; Stanley is only 17km (10 miles) behind him.
Peckham not hanging around
Peckham didn't stay long in Benin. A series of high quality locations received from him during the evening of 8 March show that he has continued west, flying through Togo and Ghana into Ivory Coast, and is 697km (433 miles) west of his last location in Benin. He is also further west than any of the other tagged Cuckoos - so far. He is currently in riverine forest between the vilages of Satama-Sokoura, Kakarakro and Dabokrira, and 160km (100 miles) northeast of the capital Yamoussoukro.
Peckham heads west
After popping up in Nigeria, Peckham hasn't hung around. At around 09.30 on the morning of 4 March, we received a location that showed he had moved 603km (374 miles) further west and was in Benin, 34km (21 miles) from the border with Togo.
He's alive!
We last heard form Peckham over a month and a half ago, and, whilst he seemed to be alive at the time, we were beginning to get concerned. A location received from him during the early evening on March 1 showed that not only was he alive, he was on his way back to the UK! He is currently in Nigeria 55km (34.5 miles) east of the River Niger and 213km (131 miles) south of the capital, Abuja.
No news from Peckham
We last heard from Peckham on 13 January. At that time everything seemed OK. He was alive and well and his tag was in good working order. We hope that he has moved into deeper cover, as it seems some of our other Cuckoos have done in the past at this time of the year, and that he will 'pop-up' in the next few weeks when he begins to move again.
No movement from Peckham
We last heard from Peckham on 13 January. The location recieved showed that he was still in the area of Gabon in which he has spent most of the winter. Hopefully we will get an update from him soon.
Peckham still in Gabon
A location received on 26 October showed that Peckham was still in Gabon and in the area he first arrived in on 3 October. It will be interesting to see where he goes from here as non of our tagged Cuckoos have spent the winter in Gabon before.
Peckham in Gabon
Since the 3 October, Peckham has left Chad and been slowly travelling further south, covering 1300km ( 810 miles) to reach a new location in the Gabon, in the the depths of the Congo Rainforest by the early morning of 8 October. Three of our other tagged Cuckoos are also in the rainforest, although they are further east in Democratic Republic of Congo.
Peckham moves south
Peckham had us worried there for a moment before delighting us when his tag sent a signal on 7 August, showing he has travelled south a further 370km (230 miles) into Chad. He still faces many challenges so lets hope he arrives safely in the central Sahel region.
Peckham still in desert
Peckham has remained in the desert in Chad since his tag first transmitted from there on 1 August. We were quite worried that he may have persished while trying to cross however a quick look at the recent weather conditions in his location in the Tibesti Mountains revealed that the area has had about half an inch of rain in the last week! This may explain why he has stopped there, in what would normally be a rather strange move for any of our Cuckoos. Hopefully he continues onwards shorlty and makes it successfully to south of the Sahara!
Peckham arrives in Chad
Peckham has left Italy, flown over the Mediterranean and arrived in Africa. Passing through Libya he completed a journey of 1900 kilometres (1,175 miles) to reach northern Chad, arriving near the Emi Koussi volcano. He still has a way to go to complete his desert crossing and reach a location in southern Chad where he can rest and refuel safely.
Peckham heads south
From Northern Italy, Peckham has flown 930km (575 miles) southeast to a location in the toe of Italy, close to Bovalino, in the region of Calabria.
Peckham in Italy
From Switzerland, David Peckham continued south-east and onto the Lombardy region of Italyby the 4 July.
David Peckham in Switzerland
David Peckham is on his way. A signal around 9.00pm on 1 July showed he had left the UK and was in Lorraine, northeastern France. He continued south east and, by 03.24 on 2 July was in Switzerland, close to Eschenbach.
(David) Peckham is on his way.
Newly named Cuckoo, David Peckham, is on his way. He has left his tagging site in the Yorkshire Dales and is currently in Suffolk, 11km (7 miles) south of the BTO headquarters.
