Updates on Hafren 's movements

Hafren heads 'home'

28 Apr 2025

Hafren was still in the Finistère department of Brittany on Friday afternoon, but by Sunday morning he was back in the UK. Heading north, he flew straight across The Channel, passing just 20 km (12 miles) west of Guernsey, before flying over the Dorset coast near Abbotsbury.

He continued, passing over Sherborne, Bath and Gloucester before arriving back in the area around Hill Court Farm and The Blacklands, where he was tagged on 18 May last year.

Hafren's homeward bound

25 Apr 2025

In the last three days Hafren has left his temporary home in the Cáceres province, Spain, and covered around 1,600 km (994 miles). His journey took him around the Bay of Biscay, passing over Bilbao, then Bordeaux, before heading to Nantes, and finally taking a rest just north of Lorient, in southern Brittany.

His next big flight should take him to the UK and to his Worcestershire summer residence!

Hafren's Spanish flee...

09 Apr 2025

As we expected, Hafren crossed the Mediterranean overnight on 5 April and headed straight inland, passing over Granada and on into central Spain.

He is currently feeding up and resting on the shores of the Puente Nuevo Reservoir in the province of Córdoba.

Hafren is go!

04 Apr 2025

Hot on Wilfrid’s heels, Hafren has now set off across the Sahara.

Leaving his temporary stopping-off point in the Republic of Côte d'Ivoire, he skirted along the eastern border of Guinea, cut across south-eastern Mali, and motored through Mauritania before arriving in Western Sahara, covering around 2,200 km (1,370 miles).

From here, he should head up along the Moroccan coast, after which he will cross into Spain.

26 Mar 2025

In the last couple of weeks, since arriving in Côte d'Ivoire (Ivory Coast), Hafren has moved slowly north up the Sassandra River, and is now close to Mont Sângbé National Park, a designated area which is home to a range of wildlife including Western Chimpanzee, African Bush Elephant, Royal Antelope and birds such as Baumann's Olive Greenbul and Emerald Starling.

No half-measure for Hafren

12 Mar 2025

Having moved from Gabon into the Republic of the Congo in mid-February, Hafren has now made significant headway. After spending a couple of weeks in an area close to the hunting reserve of Domaine de Chasse de Mboko, he set off in a westerly direction, covering some 2,500 km (1,500 miles).

His signal now places him in Côte d'Ivoire (also known as Ivory Coast). He is just 114 km (70 miles) west of the country’s capital city, Yamoussoukro.

Hafren Hoofs It

07 Apr 2025

When we last checked in, just before the weekend, Hafren was close to Mijek in Western Sahara. Since then he has cut up through Morocco, passing close to the cities of Marrakesh and Fes, before arriving on the north Moroccan coast close to Temsaman commune in the Driouch Province, on Saturday.

His most recent signal shows that he has now set off across the Mediterranean. If he crosses without incident, he should make landfall somewhere between Malaga and Almeria.

Hafren makes a move

14 Feb 2025

Hafren has made a significant move in recent days. Having spent much of his winter in eastern Gabon, he has now flown some 160 km (100 miles) north-east into the Republic of the Congo. Is this the start of his northbound spring migration?

Hafren swoops into central Senegal

29 Jul 2024

Five days ago we could see that Hafren was approaching the border of Western Sahara from Morocco.

Since then, he continued his journey south, covering a further 1,660 km (1,030 miles).

He then made his way along the coast of western Mauritania and our most recent signal, received at 6.24am today, shows that he has now headed inland, and is in central Senegal, having spent some time in the relatively lush environs of the Sylvo-Pastorale National Park.

Hafren makes for the Maghreb

24 Jul 2024

Hafren has now left Spain and is making his way south along the North African coast.

His route saw him setting off across the sea, leaving the Spanish mainland west of the famous Doñana National Park, before arriving on the Moroccan coast just to the north of the city of Agadir.

At 7.36 this morning, we received a signal showing that he was close to the Western Sahara border. In the last 48 hours Hafren has covered around 1,220 km (758 miles).

Our latest data received from Hafren, at 7.54 this morning, shows that he is presently following the Malachel River, a tributary of the Guadiana River in Extremadura, Spain.

Currently midway between the cities of Cordoba and Badajoz, he has covered some 570 km (354 miles) since leaving the Soria province two days ago.

Hafren hoofs it

15 Jul 2024

After being tagged in Worcestershire on 18 May, Hafren remained in much the same area until a few days ago.

He finally got the urge to leave, and in just two days completed a mammoth 670 km (416 miles) journey, taking him to the outskirts of Limoges in southwest-central France.

From here he swiftly continued a further 585 km (363 miles), crossing the Pyrenees just to the south of Lourdes and arriving in the Spanish province of Soria, in the Castile and León region.
