Together with the BTO Archives, the Chris Mead Library forms BTO’s knowledge centre – a comprehensive resource for all things ornithology. Our library is situated in the chapel of the old Nunnery at BTO’s headquarters in Thetford. We hold one of the finest collections of books, journals and reports on birds and the science of ornithology anywhere in the world.
Explore the Chris Mead Library
The Chris Mead Library holds thousands of books, scientific journals, BTO publications including Research Reports, and an extensive collection of annual reports kindly lodged with us by regional bird clubs, ringing groups and bird observatories.
The library has four key areas of focus:
- British and Irish ornithology
- County and regional materials, including bird reports
- The ornithology of the Western Palaearctic, Africa and the rest of the world
- Ornithological and other relevant scientific journals
The material that we receive and hold is governed by our Library Collections Policy (PDF, 737 KB)
Borrowing items
BTO members and Garden BirdWatch (GBW) subscribers are able to borrow up to three items for a maximum period of three months. Please note that journals, bird reports, and some books are reference only and cannot be loaned.
We are able to post books out to members (in the UK only), but we do make a small charge to cover the costs of outward postage and packaging.
